STORIES: Fire

How to dress for a hot date

‘The only way to be work safely in the middle of a fire is to have the right training and the right gear,’ Fred says.  'I plan ahead knowing that I usually end up shooting in the middle of where the fire is being fought. You'll find me wearing full protective gear, yellow Nomex pants, jacket, helmet, goggles, boots, gloves and carrying plenty of water. A fire shelter is also a must because if things go sideways out there, it’s too late to go find the right gear when you are being overrun by flames.’

'Good preparation is critical for any project I'm working on. Planning ahead and being prepared allows me to concentrate on making the photo when the time is right, not having to put out 'fires' that come from poor planning.'
